Ruth Heard – RIP
It is with great sadness we have to record the death of Ruth Heard on 5th October. Ruth was a great champion of the inland waterways, serving as President of IWAI from 1981-1983 and as editor of IWN for many years. She was also very involved with the waterways committee of the Heritage Council for many years and wrote extensively about the waterways.
Her publications, published under her name from her first marriage Ruth Delany included: The Canals of the South of Ireland (with Vincent Delany) 1966, The Grand Canal of Ireland (1973 & 1995), A celebration of 250 years of Ireland’s Inland Waterways (1986), updated and republished in 2004 as A celebration of 300 years of Ireland’s Inland Waterways, By Shannon Shores (1987), Ireland’s Royal Canal (1992) updated and republished with Dr Ian Bath in 2010 and The Shannon Navigation (2008).
She was instrumental in bringing the World Canals Conference to Ireland for the first time in 2001.

A funeral service for Ruth was held privately at her request.
