Restoring Our Waterways

IWAI branches are active in restoration & improvement activities with The Lagan Navigation, Coalisland Canal, Boyne Navigation and the Kilbeggan and Corbally lines of the Grand Canal.

The restoration of the Ulster Canal is currently being undertaken by Waterways Ireland stretching from Lough Erne in Co Fermanagh to Clones in Co Monaghan, Northern Ireland.

The restoration of the Ulster Canal is currently being undertaken by Waterways Ireland from Lough Erne in Co Fermanagh to Clones in Co Monaghan. The restoration is being delivered in three phases due to planning and availability of capital.

The Lagan Canal was a 27-mile (43 km) canal built to connect Belfast to Lough Neagh. The Lagan Canal is currently closed but investigations continue to be discussed for the feasibility for it’s restoration.

IWAI Coalisland rally 2004

IWAI Coalisland branch is working to raise public awareness and investigate options for restoring this abandoned canal as most of the channel is still intact.  A small boat rally was held on the canal in April 2008.

The Boyne Navigation branch of the Inland Waterways Association of Ireland have an agreement with An Taisce giving it an exclusive license to carry out restoration work on the navigation to return it to a usable waterway.
