The Inland Waterways Association of Ireland recently celebrated its 70 th anniversary with a garden party, held in the location where it all began back in 1954, ‘Dunrovin’ at Coosan Point on the shores of the lovely Louch Ree.
140 members and invited guests enjoyed sunshine, great food, wonderful entertainment and the opportunity to meet and chat with old friends and make some new ones. The day started with a performance by Mnásome, a barbershop group, that got everyone singing along.
Then the CEO of Waterways Ireland John McDonagh unveiled a historic navigation marker, which had been restored and erected facing the lough. He also spoke highly of the pivotal partnership between IWAI as a voluntary organisation and Waterways Ireland, in showcasing the vibrant life of Ireland’s waterways.
During the construction of IWAI’s new headquarters at Dunrovin, a historic marker stone was found. This stone had been commissioned by the owners of the property, Peggy and Harry Rice, on construction of the original property in May 1948. The Rice family were founding members of the Association and bequeathed the site to the Association, so it was appropriate that it was restored and reinstated. This stone was unveiled by Martin Donnelly, chair of the sub-committee who managed the development of the new headquarters.
The final unveiling was of a memorial stone to all the deceased members of the Association, kindly donated by Carmel and Thomas Meegan.
Music was provided by Shaun O’Dowd, who had almost everyone on their feet and the celebration cake was cut by the current President Kay Baxter and no less than seven past-presidents. An excellent barbeque was provided by CS Chefs Caterers.
With a special memorial plaque commissioned to mark the occasion, and available to purchase in IWAI’s online shop, it truly was a day to remember.
